Institution

Founded:	1970 as Leeds Poly, from amalgamation of various 19th-century colleges (earliest 1824); university status 1992.
Site:	Two campuses in Leeds: one in the Civic Quarter and one in the leafy woodland of Headingley. Also several key city-centre buildings (eg Broadcasting Place, the Rose Bowl, Cloth Hall Court, Electric Press in Millennium Square).
How to get there:	Leeds very accessible by road (M1 and M62), by national coach services, by rail (2 hours from London Kings Cross), and by air (Leeds/Bradford airport 8 miles; Manchester airport just over 1 hour). Civic Quarter Campus is walking distance of train and bus/coach stations; frequent bus services link campuses.

Student services & facilities

Student advice & services:	Helpzones for student queries at all campuses: disability support team (with dyslexia specialist and technical help); student counselling service; financial adviser; international students adviser; childcare services including play scheme and crèche; 2 health centres, staffed by nurses; multi-faith chaplaincy with Islamic prayer facilities. Also SU advice service.
Amenities:	Shops, cybercafé, coffee lounge, refectories on both campuses, cashpoints, repro services, bars, The Met club venue.
Sporting facilities:	Carnegie sports centre at Headingley Campus (for PE and sports courses, students and public use), with floodlit synthetic pitches, 5-a-side pitch, athletics track, 2 large sports halls, gymnasia, swimming pool, dance studio, fitness & weights rooms, squash courts and indoor climbing wall. Regional tennis and gymnastics centre. Fitness facilities at Civic Quarter Campus and 2 main halls.
Accommodation:	Almost all first years housed (guaranteed for those who have firmly accepted a place). 4500 self-catering places: rents £80- £155, 41- or 45-week contracts. Some students live in privately-owned accommodation for whole course (plentiful and cheap); rents £67+ pw plus bills. Help through Unipol Student Homes.

Study opportunities & careers

Library & information services:	Integrated library, computing and media facilities on all campuses; 365,000+ volumes, approx 11,900 periodical subscriptions; extensive access to media and electronic resources; 2000+ study places. Ratio 1:5 workstations to students, networked with access to electronic information, email and internet. Library and IT facilities open 24/7 throughout the year. IT staff support from help desks; off-campus support via the web. IT skills taught within students' courses. Induction to library and information services for all new students including making best use of electronic and print information sources. Information provision, £67 pa spent for each student (FTE)
Other learning resources:	Language laboratories, audio-visual resources, special needs support area, off-site library services for distance learners.
Study abroad:	Opportunity to study or undertake work placements abroad on many courses. Formal exchange links and voluntary opportunities with universities and colleges in Western Europe, USA and beyond.
Careers:	Personal and impartial service to students and graduates.

Money

Living expenses budget:	Minimum budget of £6500 pa (excluding tuition fees) recommended by university.
Term-time work:	University recommends limit of 15 hours' work a week for full-time student. Some jobs available on campus; university Jobshop helps find work on or off campus.
Financial help:	520+ awards, of £3000 in Year 1, for students resident in England, whose family income is up to £25k pa and who are eg care leavers, qualify for income support or come from a low-participation neighbourhood. Scholarship of £1000 discount on Year 1 fees for all those with grades AAB at A-level or equivalent. Also £1.12 million government access funds, 1800 pa students helped; priorities are childcare, commuting costs, mature students, students with disabilities, finalists. Range of sports and academic scholarships. Apply for help to financial support & advice team, student services.
University tuition fees:	Home students pay £8500 pa for first degrees. International students pay £10,500−£11,500 pa.

Living

What's it like as a place to live? Leeds - Amazing, cultural melting pot, 24-hour city, exotic, friendly, value for money!

How's the student accommodation? Reasonably priced, lots of it! Ranges from very nice to very not nice.

What's the student population like? Very diverse in age, gender, ethnicity and nationality.

How do students and locals get on? Better in recent years due to student volunteering in the community.

Studying

What's it like as a place to study? Avery wide range of places to study and courses to take in both HE/FE.

What are the teaching staff like? Again, from dedicated, exciting and friendly too....not!

Socialising

What are student societies like? Both universities have a wide range of societies, which are growing every year.

What's a typical night out? Leeds has been voted the best city for going out!

And how much does it cost? Food, drink and events are well priced.

How can you get home safely? Taxis are available at reasonable cost.

Money

Is it an expensive place to live? No! Most people find it reasonably 'ok' to live on.

Average price of a pint? £1 to £3.50.

And the price of a takeaway? £5 to £7 (or less?)

What's the part-time work situation? The university helps you find work and supports you with time commitments.

Summary

What's the best feature about the place? It is both a big city and a small town at the same time!

And the worst? Local Leeds citizens are missing out on 54 hugs per person per week!

And to sum it all up? Big, fun, cheap, lush, happy and full of friendly students.
