Institution

Founded:	1965
Structural features:	Campus in Chatham joint with University of Greenwich (and a joint school of pharmacy) and Canterbury Christ Church University. Association with Imperial College at Wye in Ashford. Links with four French universities and a centre in Brussels.
Site:	300-acre campus, on outskirts of Canterbury; also Medway Campus (Chatham), plus centres in Tonbridge and in Brussels.
How to get there:	Good road and rail links between Canterbury, London and Europe: 55 mins by train from London Victoria or Charing Cross; served by M2, M20 and M25. Heathrow and Gatwick airports, Channel ports (Dover, Ramsgate) and Channel Tunnel all 1+ hour drive.

Student services & facilities

Student advice & services:	Personal tutorial system; health and counselling service; disability support unit; learning resources centre; SU provides legal and financial advice; day nursery; chaplaincy; travel bureau.
Amenities:	Blackwells bookshop; Gulbenkian Theatre; Cinema 3 (regional film theatre); own radio station; purpose-built nightclub with bars and bistro all on site.
Sporting facilities:	Sports centre provides facilities for over 30 different activities (including coaching to international standard).
Accommodation:	All first-year students offered accommodation (subject to conditions). 4800 places in Canterbury, some ensuite and all with internet connections: rents £96–£150 per week self-catering, 39-week contracts; £114–£175 pw B&B, 31-week contracts or longer. At Medway, rents £127 pw self-catering, 39-week contracts. Privately-owned accommodation locally £80–£85 pw plus bills, 52-week contracts.

Study opportunities & careers

Library & information services:	Over 1 million books, periodicals, pamphlets, slides, microfilms and electronic media. Special collections: Early and rare materials, research collections and archives; close links with Cathedral library. Information provision, £127 pa spent for each student (FTE). Separate IT service, access 24 hours/day. 600+ public access computer terminals on site, with access to library and internet (ratio 1:16 workstations to students). IT support from computing reception, helpdesk, online help and documentation. Library skills training programme, online packages; IT skills courses including html and European Computer Driving Licence.
Study abroad:	Formal Erasmus and other exchange links with many EU universities/colleges – open to students in a range of disciplines eg computer science, drama, economics, law, maths and social psychology.
Careers:	Careers advisory service.

Money

Living expenses budget:	Minimum budget of £7236−£14,600 pa (excluding tuition fees) recommended by university.
Term-time work:	Student Jobshop.
Financial help:	Award of £5000 in Year 1 (£4000 fee reduction, £1000 bursary; £2000 bursary and no fee reduction in subsequent years) for English students whose family income is up to £42.6k pa and who live in a low-participation neighbourhood. Also scholarships for those with high grades at A-level (or equivalent), for sport, music and for students from partner schools and colleges. £346,000 government funds, 740 students helped (almost all who applied), average amount £200–£500. Special help to students not publicly funded (assigned prior to start of course).
University tuition fees:	Home students pay £9000 pa for first degrees. International students pay £11,230 pa (classroom), £12,600 (MPharm) or £13,400 (lab-based courses) - less for year out.

Living

What's it like as a place to live? A fantastic, vibrant location, with a great mix of city and campus lifestyles.

How's the student accommodation? There is a wide range of university accommodation that represents value for money. Private accommodation varies, so important to look for accredited landlords.

What's the student population like? Large mix of nationalities that promotes a friendly, multicultural and holistic campus experience.

How do students and locals get on? There is a good atmosphere as well as initiatives, both internally and externally, to boost this.

Studying

What's it like as a place to study? Courses themselves represent a diverse learning-teaching style that makes courses relevant and easily accessible.

What are the teaching staff like? On the whole, the staff are fantastic and take an active interest in students' academic ability and achievements. Many are leading researchers in their field

Socialising

What are student societies like? With over 300 societies and sports clubs, that range from salsa to kortball, every student can (and does) get involved throughout their three years.

What's a typical night out? A trip to the campus nightclub (venue)

And how much does it cost? Cheap and good value for money (£5).

How can you get home safely? Litany of cab services and soon a late-night bus service.

Money

Is it an expensive place to live? Canterbury is relatively expensive but lots of opportunities for part-time work.

Average price of a pint? £2.20

And the price of a takeaway? £5.

What's the part-time work situation? The Union has a dedicated jobshop that helps students get jobs – also lots of part-time work on campus.

Summary

What's the best feature about the place? The setting and feel of the campus.

And the worst? Too much to do in 3 years – can never do it all.

And to sum it all up? Amazing, life-changing experience that I would recommend for everyone.
