Living
What's it like as a place to live? Harper Adams is a really friendly and safe place to live.
How's the student accommodation? All first year students usually live on campus, which is ran by the University College and you can choose to be catered Monday to Friday or to cook for yourself. You can also choose to be ensuite or not, and all on-site accommodation includes your laundry being done for you once a week and full cleaning! Other students live off campus in private accommodation, which tends to range from £45pw to £65pw.
What's the student population like? Very friendly place with a strong community spirit! Quite a strong rural background of students attracted by the location and courses but they come from a wide range of locations.
How do students and locals get on? Newport is a close community, there are no no-go areas and as long as you park your car considerately (ie not over their drive!) and can remember to put the rubbish out most weeks, students and locals get on fine. The Students Union even had a float in the town carnival this year.
Studying
What's it like as a place to study? Originally an Agricultural College, Harper Adams has a large number of agriculture (with specialisms) students, and a college farm as a teaching facility. However the range is now much broader with courses in engineering, business, food, animals, leisure/tourism, land and countryside management and great facilities to match.
What are the teaching staff like? Lecturers are supportive, easy to contact and generally on first name terms with all their students.
Socialising
What are student societies like? Clubs and societies form a large part of the social live at Harper Adams and there's pretty much something for everyone - and if there isn't one to suit you, we would love for you to set your own club/society up, just see our Students Union Societies Representative or Sports Secretary. Our clubs and societies include Rugby (Union & League), Hockey, Netball, Football, Shooting, 4 x 4 Off- Roading, Gaelic Football, Equestrian, Harper Ireland, Harper Cymru, Harper Scotland, Harper Forum, LGBT, Christian Union and HOPS (Harper Outdoor Pursuits Society)!
What's a typical night out? There's something on every night of the week but the main student night is Wednesday in the legendary Union bar.
And how much does it cost? Entry is free to all members of the Students Union, who pay a one-off membership fee at the start of their course.
How can you get home safely? Walk (normally takes about 40 minutes to walk back to town after a few drinks!) or taxis are cheap. Quinny from The Phez (Pheasant Inn) also runs a free mini-bus service on a Wednesday night.
Money
Is it an expensive place to live? Not really but with Waitrose as one of the two supermarkets in town, if you have expensive taste the money soon runs out!
Average price of a pint? £2.20 in the Students Union but around £2.40 in town.
And the price of a takeaway? A large margarita pizza is around £4.80.
What's the part-time work situation? There is some part -time work available in the college bar or as a student ambassador for the college and there's also work available in Newport. However, a lot of students tend to work during the holidays especially Easter and summer. The college provides considerable help here with good links with employers and regularly posts vacancies on the college website.
Summary
What's the best feature about the place? The community atmosphere, also known as Harper Spirit! Everyone gets involved to make things happen, a fantastic example of which are the four annual balls organised by student committees.
And the worst? There's so much going on that it can be difficult to get time just to relax and chill out.
And to sum it all up?The college motto is work hard, play hard and in my opinion nothing describes Harper Adams better. Harper students know they're here for a reason but that it's also important to enjoy themselves!
