Institution

Founded:	1894 as Northampton Institute; university status in 1966.
Site:	Main campus in Islington, close to the City. Also Cass Business School near Moorgate; law school in Gray’s Inn; optometry clinic in Bath Street; other community & health sciences sites in West Smithfield and Whitechapel.
How to get there:	Angel or Farringdon underground stations for main site; several bus routes. All other sites well-served by tube and bus.

Student services & facilities

Student advice & services:	Student centre gives access to all support services; SU information & representation centre; health centre; counselling services; careers & skills development service.
Amenities:	Bookshop on site; SU recreational facilities, including café, bar, shop and social venue.
Sporting facilities:	Saddlers sports centre (including fitness centre and sauna); squash courts; playing fields in north London; variety of SU clubs and societies.
Accommodation:	Guaranteed for all first years aged 18+ from outside Greater London, who have a firm acceptance of an offer (conditional or unconditional) and who apply before the deadline. 905 self-catering places (535+ for first years), rents from £163 per week, mostly 42-week contracts Sept−July; more university accommodation expected. Most students live in privately-owned accommodation for two years, rents £95−£230 pw for self-catering (plus bills).

Study opportunities & careers

Library & information services:	Library with 350,000 volumes, 25,000+ periodical titles online; 1100 study places. 4 further libraries in business school, law school and school of community & health sciences. Information provision, £105 pa spent for each student (FTE). Separate IT service, access 24 hours 6/7 days/week. Wifi access throughout all main sites plus residential network in halls of residence. IT skills courses on all supported software.
Other learning resources:	Variety of e-learning tools give access to course materials, resources, interactive activities and assessment.
Study abroad:	Some opportunities to study in Europe (through Erasmus).
Careers:	Information, advice and placement service, including one-to-one guidance, mock interviews, CV and application checking, employability workshops etc. Resources include careers library, online vacancy board and website. Employers regularly deliver seminars and recruitment events on campus.

Money

Living expenses budget:	Budget of £203–£333 per week (excluding tuition fees) recommended by university.
Term-time work:	Centre for career & skills development helps students find part-time jobs.
Financial help:	Bursaries may change in 2012. In 2010, bursaries of £770 pa were available for UK students with family income of up to £25k, and of £360 pa where family income is £25k−£30k. Additional school-based scholarships in specific subjects. Also help available from government access to learning funds. Apply for help to student centre.
University tuition fees:	Home students pay £9000 pa for first degrees. International students pay (approximately) £9000–£13,000.

Academic features:

Many courses include optional 1-year professional placement and lead to exemptions from professional exams. All courses offer introduction to IT, development of communication skills and opportunities for learning languages; major individual project in final year.

Living

What's it like as a place to live? The phrase 'London is our campus' sums it up. As long as you remain pro-active, you will find everything you want.

How's the student accommodation? Currently being renovated.

What's the student population like? City University prides itself on the fact that it is highly diverse, with students and staff from countries all over the world.

How do students and locals get on? The closest neighbours complain sometimes regarding noise but, other than that, there is no contact.

Studying

What's it like as a place to study? My course wasn't really flexible until third year, which then had many options. Library and workspaces are great now they have been renovated.

What are the teaching staff like? Varies from school to school. Staff seem much more engaged when teaching third year material.

Socialising

What are student societies like? There is a good range but, as the union's relatively new, they are quite underdeveloped.

What's a typical night out? Bar for a few drinks, then live music venue.

And how much does it cost? £20.

How can you get home safely? Underground before 00.30 then bus – not alone!

Money

Is it an expensive place to live? Everyone is skint but that's just student life, isn't it?!

Average price of a pint? £3.50.

And the price of a takeaway? £8.

What's the part-time work situation? University Careers Centre is excellent. Also, work as an ambassador or a foot into teaching available through uni. Otherwise, pub jobs are easy to get but poorly paid.

Summary

What's the best feature about the place? Opportunity! London is what you make it and as you learn the tricks and tips, it just gets better.

And the worst? You need to be enthusiastic and out-going. It's easy to feel alone, even when you're surrounded by people.

And to sum it all up? A social and working network, which expands across the world.
