Student view
Living
Like the city of Worcester, it's not massive, yet the atmosphere is predominantly warm; not hard to feel a sense of belonging, especially around the approachable department staff and SU. Facilities on campus are reliable and functional. Socialite students can gravitate towards the bar - aptly named The Dive - which offers a range of entertainment and activities. Library offers a vast range of sources and facilities in a modern and pleasant environment. Very flexible modular scheme, where degree students create a personal timetable from a range of modules; also makes changing course in first term easy. Although campus can seem over-run with sports studies students, in fact students are on a diverse range of courses - archaeology to web development. Great commitment to overseas partners, so good opportunities to study alongside Europeans, Scandinavians and Americans both at home and abroad. City is only a short walk (even shorter bus ride) from the campus and satisfies all needs, with popular high street stores and independent outlets. Once bored with retail therapy, the local architecture, live music venues, theatre and county cricket ground are all within a small radius. Other Midland locations are within easy reach for the more intrepid nomads. All combines to offer more than simply an education.
Summary
Housing: Good self-catered halls (6-bedroom flats, with living room and kitchen). Hall rents reasonable. Local private sector plentiful; university and SU hold housing lists; SU runs accommodation days. Eats: University refectory value for money; also SU snack area. Drink: SU bar cheap (loads of offers). Nightlife: SU cheap weekly ents programme eg Lush, celeb DJs; final year and graduation balls; rag and freshers' weeks and lots of live music. Locals: Tolerant. Best to avoid Angel Place at night. Sports: Good facilities on and off campus. Travel: Train and bus services to Birmingham (1 hour). Financial help: Available for those with real problems; also loans and advice from university and SU. Jobs: Plenty locally, in and out of term time. Best features: Friendly campus and SU. And worst: Dead at weekends; road systems and parking are troublesome.
