| Living expenses budget: | Minimum budget of £7200−£8800 for an academic year (excluding tuition fees) recommended by university. |
| Term-time work: | School allows term-time work for full-time students. Some part-time jobs at School; many in local bars and shops. |
| Financial help: | Tapered fee waiver so students have a fee reduction of £3000 pa if their family income is up to £25k pa (so pay £6000 fees); the fee reduction is increased by £200 for every £1000 family income, so the fee is reduced by £2000 when family income is £30k pa, by £1000 when family income is £35k pa; no reduction when family income is beyond £42.6k pa. WSA scholarships of £1000 for international students and of £500 for fashion marketing students offered on a competitive basis. Also government funds. |

Living
What's it like as a place to live? Small, friendly, sociable city. You can't walk five minutes without bumping into a friend.
How's the student accommodation? Art School - one Hall, Erasmus Park, houses of ten, ensuite shower but share a kitchen. Private accommodation very good but quite expensive!
What's the student population like? Friendly at the art school. Mostly students from the south, but growing international postgrad community.
How do students and locals get on? Very integrated, students and city as one, everywhere accessible to everyone. An excellent community.
Studying
What's it like as a place to study? Has gone through a recent period of change but students numbers rocketing and league table positions rising.
What are the teaching staff like? Some old guard left, they are excellent. A lot of new staff yet to make a mark.
Socialising
What are student societies like? No societies at Winchester School of Art, but access to 100s at Southampton University.
What's a typical night out? A meal in Ghandis (Indian) followed by pubs and the Art School Union.
And how much does it cost? Free entry mostly. Drink average price.
How can you get home safely? Walking, cycling, taxi if you really need.
Money
Is it an expensive place to live? Quite expensive accommodation, but save on transport - can walk everywhere.
Average price of a pint? At our union - £1.90!
And the price of a takeaway? £5-£7.
What's the part-time work situation? Bar and shop work. University approves of part-time jobs but does not actively help.
Summary
What's the best feature about the place? The art school community - friendly dynamic and creative.
And the worst? Can be a bit insular and claustrophobic.
And to sum it all up? If you are looking for London, go there; if you are ready to be inspired and make your own fun - come to Winchester.
