Student view

Living

It's a small, friendly college with around 600 students studying all aspects of music, from jazz to church music, baroque to popular. A long history of musical education, having pioneered practical music exams from 1879, and introducing the first junior department to a conservatoire. Most students are British nationals but a strong international contingent. Set in the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, a world heritage site and a fantastic venue in which to study. Brilliant new facilities, including over 80 practice rooms, keyboard lab, recording studio and a chill-out area in the basement. SU has always and continues to have a very good relationship with the staff and is proactive for its students, in a lively and social environment.

Summary

Housing: New halls 5 mins' walk; others a bus ride away. Accommodation relatively cheap and easy to find in Greenwich area. Eats: College canteen, many inexpensive restaurants, pubs and cafés. Drinks: Many pubs close by; many give student offers throughout the week. Nightlife: Regular SU parties in Greenwich and closer to town. Sports: Active SU arrangements for football, hockey, basketball, tennis and a local gym with student rates. Travel: Easy to travel into town via DLR, bus or train (10-20 mins). Excellent night bus services. Financial help: Good, with a supportive SU committee and warden. Jobs: Some part-time work in college, private teaching, gigs and bar work easy to find. Best features: Small, family-like atmosphere. And worst: Noise from film crews on location. Informal name: Trinity/TCM.
