Student advice & services:Advice on student health and well-being, finance, disabilities and international student matters; accommodation and counselling services, chaplains. Residential and other facilities for disabled students. 66-place nursery (enquire when applying).
Amenities:Job centre, media centre, sport and well-being facilities. SU bar, café, club venue, shop, advice centre, clubs and societies.
Sporting facilities:Sports centre includes 500-spectator sports hall, squash courts, floodlit artificial pitch. Second centre with sports hall, gym, sauna. Also playing fields.
Accommodation:All first years guaranteed accommodation (if university is first choice and application received by 1 April); also all international students who apply by 1 August. 724 self-catering places in halls, houses and flats, rents £52.50 per week (for shared room) to £90 pw; 400 in managed private-sector housing, rents £60−£65 plus bills; all contracts 40 weeks. Private accommodation locally approx £55−£70 pw.

Study opportunities & careers

Library & information services:374,462 books plus 4980 journal titles and 42,200 e-books; 1340 study places. Services and support for students with disabilities. Wireless capability; easy access to online information on and off-campus. Annual information provision spend, £97 per student (FTE). Over 5000 computer workstations across the campus with internet access; ratio 1:7 workstations to students. Library facilities open 116 hours/week in term time. Information skills training for new students and online or face-to-face skills support at any stage.
Other learning resources:HD TV studios and digital editing suites; convergent newsroom; 30-room crime-scene house laboratory, 10-vehicle examination laboratory, digital evidence laboratory, forensic laboratories including analytical equipment and DNA profiling suite; court room; hydrotherapy pool; sports therapy laboratory; strength and conditioning laboratory; environmental chamber; 3D motion capture/analysis system; police station; health & social care laboratory space (dedicated areas that simulate eg wards, physiotherapy laboratory, dental laboratory).
Study abroad:Students can study abroad for up to one year in Europe or US, as integral part of some courses. 
Careers:Information, advice and guidance on career planning, volunteering, employment, further study and training. University-wide programme of workshops and presentations. Resources include comprehensive website with live vacancy bulletin, magazines, DVDs, journals, and employer and occupational files.

Money

Living expenses budget:Minimum budget of £600 per month (excluding tuition fees) recommended by university. 
Term-time work:Job centre, run by SU, helps find part-time work. Term-time work available on campus in SU, library & information services, student services.  
Financial help:200 scholarships worth £4000 for first-year students whose family income is up to £42.6k (a lower limit for some scholarships). Also bursaries of £2000 for elite athletes, £1500 pa for international students paying their own fees and £1075 pa for students leaving care. Also approx £600,000 access to learning funds, awards of £50−£3500. Special help for student parents, students with disabilities and mature students. Apply to student funding team.
University tuition fees:Home students pay £8500 pa for first degree courses (£6000 for foundation degrees). International students pay £9750 pa (£1000 in placement year).

Living

What's it like as a place to live? Middlesbrough is a good place to live - close to town from campus and close to the nightlife.

How's the student accommodation? Here the accommodation is reasonably good.

What's the student population like?  Friendly and diverse.

How do students and locals get on?  It could be much better but each leave the other to their own devices. 

Studying

What's it like as a place to study?  A mix of traditional and non-traditional courses give a good variety of options.

What are the teaching staff like?  Interested in student matters.

Socialising

What are student societies like? A wide range of activities. Clubs and societies give our students every option to become involved.

What's a typical night out?  Union, bars, club, house party!

And how much does it cost?  £20−£25

How can you get home safely?  Easily via taxi or walking home in a group. 

Money

Is it an expensive place to live? All students are skint.

Average price of a pint?  £2, or £1.80 in the student bars.

And the price of a takeaway? £3.50.

What's the part-time work situation?  The student union has a job centre to aid students who seek part-time work.

Summary

What's the best feature about the place?  The university campus and union.

 and the worst?  Beyond the train station - non-student land!

And to sum it all up?  M'Boro is a great place for students, with a wide range of stuff to do plus a brilliant union; you're guaranteed have a good time here!
