It has a medium-sized campus on the grassy Cathedral hillside, overlooking Guildford - 10 minutes' walk to the railway (35 minutes to London) and 15 to the bus station. Being on a hill it's not ideal for students with mobility problems. First years are in university accommodation, as are many final year and all international students; which range from standard to very good (most rooms have a basin, some ensuite); kitchen shared between 4-14 and there are single and mixed floors. Good community spirit on campus and at the smaller residential site (3 miles from university with free bus service). Students living within a 3-mile radius are normally unable to have a car on campus. Launderette, shop, bookshop, oriental food store, computer parts shop, post office and bank on campus, also a visiting fruit and veg market once a week. Large library (open until 1.30am), superbly-equipped sports hall and 24-hour-access PC labs. Students' union has excellent entertainments: discos every Wednesday, Friday and most Saturday nights, free films on Sunday nights. It produces award-winning media - Barefacts (weekly student newspaper) and GU2 (campus radio station). Social advice and support from university, also health centre with family-planning advice and confidential counselling service; SU has dedicated education & welfare officers. Guildford is fairly expensive but the 3 nightclubs offer student discounts. Dozens of pubs, 2 theatres, a vast cinema complex, all coupled with the lovely Surrey countryside. Originally a technological university but now with thriving human sciences, performing arts, law and cultural departments. Courses are generally up-to-date, most modular, and most have a period in industry (some abroad) offering valuable experience. Workload varies from OK to hard, generally combining end-of-semester exams with assessed coursework. It is a culturally unique social centre - an easy place to make friends.
Housing: University accommodation is affordable; few married/family flats. Off-campus is a little more expensive; check out the accommodation office or take over friends' houses. Eats: Meal on campus £4-£5 (university or SU). In town, good choice (eg Pizza Express, Zizzi etc), range of prices. Drink: 5 union bars, complete range of drinking environments, wide range of beers and spirits (£1.80 a pint). Pubs more expensive. Good local brew - TEA from the Hogsback Brewery. Nightlife: Very good on site, with cabaret, bands (The Darkness, Shy FX, Mark Owen, Coolio, East 17, We are Scientists, The Jam, Pendulum), free lunchtime concerts, discos, balls and annual festivals. Theatres and Odeon cinema complex in town. Locals: Very friendly if you treat them well. No problem areas (Guildford's quite posh!) Sports: Good cheap facilities; friendly and competitive events. Floodlit astroturf pitch, superb indoor facilities eg multi-purpose gym, climbing wall, and a brand new multi-million pound sports centre in the planning. Financial help: University and government funds. Jobs: Lots on site (eg bars, catering outlets) and shop work and telephone sales in town at reasonable rates; employment agency on campus. Best features: Beautiful and culturally diverse campus. And worst: Expensive part of the country.
David Varney (British Gas etc), Robert Earl (Planet Hollywood).
