Living

What's it like as a place to live? I think Stoke is a really friendly place to live. And it is very central, Birmingham and Manchester are both approx 45mins away on the train, and then you have Hanley, which is good for shopping, eating and nights out. Honestly, there are nicer places to live than Stoke, but it has such a student vibe to it – that the people make the place, and it is down to those people to make it what it is.

How's the student accommodation? Uni accommodation is ok. You can have en-suite, which is more expensive than the shared facilities. But from feedback from both, as much as the rooms are a bit small, everyone enjoys their time there, as they are on campus, with the student shop and one of the venues right by, and round the corner from the train station and bus stops. Private accommodation is a bit hit and miss; sometimes you get a really nice standard of accommodation, but the rent is a bit more than what you would pay for the houses that aren't as nice. Personally, I think it is worth paying the bit extra a week for a nicer standard of housing.

What's the student population like? The student population is definitely friendly, and probably one of the Diverse I have seen. We have students from all over the world!! We have local students, part-time, mature, and your typical full-time 18−21year olds from all over the country. I have met a great range of people from all over, being at Staffs. And with the size of the uni, by the end of your first year – you might not know everyone's names, but you definitely recognise everyone and know them to say hello to.

How do students and locals get on? You sometimes get the odd noise complaint when students are coming back from a night out and are making too much noise, but apart from that, everyone just gets along with what they have to do, and live alongside each other.

Studying

What's it like as a place to study? I think it is a brilliant place to study. A lot of the courses offer you industry experience, and with many of our faculties boasting some of the top facilities on offer. I wouldn't say the courses are traditional, I think they try to keep up to date with what is going on in the world, so that when you graduate you are an "Industry Irresistible"

What are the teaching staff like? I think the teaching staff are good. On my course we had people teaching us that were either still in the industry or had very close connections with it still. It meant that what we were learning was always very relevant and up to date. As well as the fact that our lecturers could offer first hand experience and examples.

Socialising

What are student societies like? We have almost 100 societies and many, many sports clubs. In terms of societies what we offers ranges from cheerleading, dance, Ultimate Frisbee, Animation, Gaming, Poker, Rounders etc etc....the list goes on!!!! Yes, we have loads of people involved, I would say most people are a member of something. And our Wednesday nights out in the student union night club are always packed with clubs and societies out on socials.

What's a typical night out? Well, Mondays you go out to Hanley and on Wednesdays & Fridays you go to the LRV (Student Union Night Club).

And how much does it cost? Hanley will cost more than a night out in the union, as you have to take into account taxis, and entrance to the night clubs and stuff, so I would say a good night out would be about £35, obviously that depends on the individual. For a night in the student union bar, it is generally a much cheaper night out, I would say £20 would do you maximum, and you should easily have change to spare.

How can you get home safely? In Hanley there is a taxi rank just by the main strip of bars and clubs. And when going out on campus, we have door staff, campus security and CCTV around the local area. But everyone lives so close to the Student Venue, that once you have got your burger or kebab, you will be home in 10 mins.

Money

Is it an expensive place to live? Nope, Stoke is known for being relatively cheap to live compared to other towns. I had a part-time job, which gave me a good bit of spending money. Obviously, if you are just depending on your loan and bursaries, everyone gets a bit skint towards the end of the semester.

Average price of a pint? £2.20.

And the price of a takeaway? Maximum £5−6.

What's the part-time work situation? The Students' Union has about 250 members of student staff. And then there are many local supermarkets, and shops in Hanley, Stoke and Newcastle-Under-Lyme for part-time work opportunities. The Student Union, currently pays £5.85 p/hr.

Summary

What's the best feature about the place? The Student Vibe, all the clubs and Societies, the Nights out. There is always something to do or somewhere to go, be it popping into town, or jumping on a train (Manchester 45min,. Brum 40mins, London Hour and a half) It is just a friendly place.

And the worst? The weather!! I'm sure summer only lasts for 3weeks in May!

And to sum it all up? Wouldn't change it for the world, have had a great student experience at Staffs.
