Living

Large modern complex of buildings in Tooting, south-west London. All pre-clinical and approximately half clinical teaching on site, with radiography and nursing split between both the main site and Kingston uni. First years can apply for a place in self-catering mixed halls, 10 minutes' walk from the medical school. Halls life is good (socially) and easy (financially and domestically). Tooting is good for eating and drinking; theatre, film and more require a short five-minute bus journey; central London is about 20 minutes by tube. SU is apolitical holding fortnightly discos in the newly-refurbished SU bar, plus many other events (band nights, quiz nights, karaoke, formal balls every term) and specials (Christmas revue, rag week, freshers' fortnight). The bar is good value and rumoured to be the longest student bar in London; as well as the usual, it has guest beers, wines and malts on constant promotion. Hot and cold food now available at brand new SU café 'Eddie Wilsons'. Most sports and leisure interests are catered for and new clubs constantly being formed. Sports ground is at Cobham (Surrey) but a sports hall on site has 3 squash courts, 3 multigyms and a weights room (membership only £20 pa). Successful clubs include hockey, football, netball, cricket, tennis, rugby and rowing. All clubs are remarkably active socially! School offers a range of subjects in health science, from 4- or 5-year medical courses, radiography, physiotherapy, pharmacy through to paramedic courses. Possible to intercalate a degree at the end of the second year (or later). Student-staff relations are relaxed and friendly. Ideal if you want to become a capable and caring physician, and still enjoy every moment.
