Student view

James Frith (Chemistry)

Living

What's it like as a place to live? Not a lot to do during the day but lots of night life.

How's the student accommodation? Most uni accomodation is good, if you want to pay more you get better accommodation. Always had nice houses but there are grottier ones around.

What's the student population like? Friendly, mainly from southern England, mainly middle class. Large Chinese and Indian international population.

How do students and locals get on? Locals can be troublesome but generally ok. Large Polish population who tend to fight with each other but leave students alone. Don't go to the Flowers Estate, but doesn't compare to London. Just a big collection of chavs.

Studying

What's it like as a place to study? Good working environment. Amount of study time required varies from course to course. Hartley Library is big and lots of study area.

What are the teaching staff like? Mostly attentive. One or two members of staff are clearly very clever and have been employed due to this but are not good at teaching and passing on their knowledge.

Socialising

What are student societies like? Lots of societies and easy to start new ones. I haven't been involved in any though.

What's a typical night out? See how drunk you can get. Sometimes there is good music.

And how much does it cost? Very cheap alcohol – some of the cheapest in the country.

How can you get home safely? There is a safety bus from the student union; lots of taxi's. Often walk-able.

Money

Is it an expensive place to live? Same as the rest of the country.

Average price of a pint? Cheapest price, 50p a pint; average £2.50 from student pubs.

And the price of a takeaway? Average − standard Domino's Tuesday deal for £9.99.

What's the part-time work situation? Hard to get but people do seem to. University will help you.

Summary

What's the best feature about the place? Nice campus, with lots of green spaces for when its sunny.

And the worst? Not a lot of culture.

And to sum it all up? Loved my time there, but would have liked more activities to do during the day.
