Sheffield is far from what it once was: no longer just an industrial city but a place that is fast gaining a reputation as a trendy attractive city that has lots to offer - and one of the safest cities in the county. Courses are up-to-date and relevant, with excellent chances to gain practical knowledge and experience in industry. Students come from all over the world to benefit from the diverse experience of the university. Quality of teaching staff is a real draw, most being approachable and willing to help. Iconic SU building in the HUBS (Hallam union building for students) - 'the best students' union I've ever seen' according to Kim Howells, then education minister. Hallam SU is very attractive; not only does it have great bars and a nightclub but an extensive range of student activities to get involved in and fantastic advice centre. You can join a society, run a volunteering project or improve your course by becoming a student rep. If you are into sport, it is worth knowing that Hallam had 6 athletes competing for GB in last World University Games. With so much to do, there's something for everyone, no matter what your interests.
Housing: Abundant, good quality and mainly affordable. All close to campuses. Eats: Tasty and cheap in the union Bar Phoenix. Drink: Union bar is cheap, lively and friendly; city is full of bars and coffee shops. Nightlife: Lots to do, whatever your tastes - big nightclubs, theatres, museums, bars, sporting events. Locals: Very welcoming to students. Sports: City has fantastic sporting facilities. Travel: University and union close to buses and train station (student discounts available). Taxis abundant. Jobs: Plenty of part-time jobs in city. University has good job-seeking service, Network. Best features: Atmosphere in Sheffield; really student-friendly city (recently called 'biggest village in Britain). And worst: The northern weather!
Bruce Oldfield (fashion designer), David Mellor (cutlery designer), Nick Park (Wallace & Gromit), Howard Wilkinson (footballer), Richard Caborn (Sheffield MP).
