Student view

Living

The town is quiet, with few local pubs although there are some decent, friendly places to socialise. College has a good atmosphere. SU has grown a lot recently – regular full union meetings enable every student’s voice to be heard; it’s ambitious and active politically as well as socially. SU bar was redesigned and built by students in the style of a cool London-style bar. It’s packed every Thursday (event night) and hosts bands (Indie to R&B, funk to jazz and house), all kinds of discos and fancy dress extravaganzas. Main attraction is the cheap beer, happy hours, and a friendly atmosphere. There’s also a film club and a monthly magazine, written and published by students. Easy access to London (only 15 minutes by train). Bromley is close, with pubs (not too bad) and leisure centre (nice, not too expensive). College very relaxed until degree shows approach. Good reputation in industry. Because of small number of students, there’s a lot of inter-departmental cooperation and everyone gets to know one another. It’s an inspiring place to be because there’s such a high concentration of creative people. Counselling tutor on hand 2 days a week. At Ravensbourne you get out what you put in!

Summary

Housing: Not all 1st years in college housing but college has accommodation list; also look in Bromley News Shopper and estate agents. Eats: Good, cheap food in canteen eg £3.50 for a filling hot lunch; vegetarians well catered for; occasional international themed food days. Chislehurst good for bars, cafes (excellent sandwich shop). Drink: £1.70+ a pint in SU bar. Lloyds in Bromley also good, as is Queens Head (local, traditional). Nightlife: SU event nights, cheap entry (sometimes free). Also monthly external events where SU takes over local venue (eg Walkabout in Bromley) for disco, cheap eats and games. Film club. Only cinemas and pubs outside college – but central London close, with all big names. Locals: Fine. Sports: No on-site sports. Excellent Pavilion sports centre in Bromley (10 mins by bus). College rugby, football and basketball teams practise at various local venues; martial arts club. Travel: Good bus and trains – night buses from London. Hardship fund: Access fund available once a year – only given to those who really need it. Jobs: Local shops and bars; also Bromley and central London. Best features: Friendly atmosphere, great ethos. And worst: Lack of residential housing. Informal name: Rave.
