Founded:1865 as a school of art, becoming Oxford Poly in 1970; university status 1992.
Site:3 main campuses: Headington campus (1 mile east of city centre), Wheatley campus (7 miles south-east of city centre; business, maths, technology, engineering), Harcourt Hill campus (2½ miles west of city centre; education, religion, philosophy).
How to get there:Good rail links to Oxford (from London, Birmingham and the North), station 2 miles by bus. By road, close to M40; coach service from London every 15 mins during the day, stops outside Headington Campus and regular services to Heathrow and Gatwick airports; buses to city centre. Brookes bus service between sites and accommodation.

Student services & facilities

Student advice & services:Counsellors, careers, accommodation, housing and chaplaincy staff; nurses; FPA; dentist on campus, visiting GPs; specialist advisers for international students, mature students and students with disabilities; SU welfare advice centre; nursery (52 places). Mentoring schemes. Study-skills programme.
Amenities:SU with bars, entertainments venue, shops, banks.
Sporting facilities:Sports centre with badminton and squash courts, dance and martial arts studio, weights training room, climbing room, fitness suite. 12 tennis courts, playing fields, artificial turf pitch, 9-hole golf course, swimming pool, land-based rowing facility.
Accommodation:First-year students making Oxford Brookes their first choice are guaranteed accommodation (some conditions apply). Approx 4000 places in halls, rents for self-catering £97− £123 per week (£122−£142 pw ensuite); £132 pw catered; most contracts 38 weeks. After first year, students can live in shared housing, at £80−£100 pw plus bills, on 46- or 50-week contracts; or in private halls £105− £125 pw on 42- or 50-week contracts.

Study opportunities & careers

Library & information services:3 libraries with wireless provision, 482,687 volumes, 16,131 ejournal titles, 1915 current print journals, over 1000 study places. Information provision, £80 pa spent for each student (FTE). IT and library services converged. 970 PC student workstations (including email and internet access), some available 24/7; all student rooms have internet points; ratio of workstations to students approx 1:14. IT helpdesk 12 hours/day during term time; tours, demonstrations and podcasts of library and information services for new students; module on microcomputer applications available to all students.
Other learning resources:Multimedia graphics workshop; study skills service.
Study abroad:150+ students study abroad each year, as part of their degree. Formal exchange links with 100+ universities and colleges throughout Europe, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand and the USA.
Careers:Advice and vacancies service; one-to-one sessions with career counsellors; career fairs and employer events; specialist advice for mature and international students; workshops and development opportunities. Support given to current students and for 3 years after graduating. Most courses offer work placements.

Money

Living expenses budget:Average budget of £9044 for an academic year (excluding tuition fees) estimated by university.
Term-time work:University allows term-time work (50% believed to work). Some work available on campus in SU bars, Ents and in registry, student recruitment, accommodation, catering. Careers centre helps find work on and off campus.
Financial help:UK/EU students whose family income is up to £5k pa receive £4500 pa (£2500 fee waiver and £2000 bursary); where it is £5−£15k pa, they receive £3200−£3500 pa (£2000 fee waiver and £1200 or £1500 bursary); or where family income is £15k−£40k pa, they receive £1300−£2050 pa (£1000 fee waiver and £300−£1050 bursary). Bursaries of up to £2000 pa for care leavers. Scholarships for community achievement and certain local students. Over £595,000 (government and university’s own hardship funds) awarded to over 750 students who had financial difficulties. Apply for help to financial aid office.
University tuition fees:Home students pay £9000 pa for first degree courses (except on healthcare courses; for year in placement, £2000; courses at partner colleges, £6000 pa). International students pay £11,000 pa (most classroom-based courses), £11,750 pa (most lab-based courses).

Living

What’s it like as a place to live?  Oxford is a vibrant, diverse and very student-centred city. Oxford Brookes offers a modern student experience.

How’s the student accommodation?  There are university and private accommodations. Uni-run acc. are well maintained and of good standard, vary in type and location. There is choice.

What’s the student population like?  Very diverse, friendly, plenty of interesting talented people from all sorts of backgrounds.

How do students and locals get on?  Very good community atmosphere, mainly student town, so the locals are young, easygoing and friendly.

Studying

What’s it like as a place to study?  Brookes is a progressive modern university with a flexible academic programme and opportunities for various curricular and extra-curricular activities.

What are the teaching staff like?  Teaching staff are very friendly, student-focused, professional and committed to delivering a good student learning experience.

Socialising

What are student societies like?  The SU is a fantastic place to meet people, develop talents further, learn new skills, socialise and have fun, get advice and support. Societies range from hobby-based to course-based and is worth signing up to them.

What’s a typical night out?  At the SU venue on Wed and Fri – over 1200 student clubnights.

And how much does it cost? You can get away with spending as little as £5–£6 pounds at the SU but obviously prices go up in town.

How can you get home safely?  Oxford Brookes is considered a very safe university. The SU runs safety bus schemes that ensure the welfare and safety of students. University and SU work closely with the police to provide a safe environment for Brookes students.

Money

Is it an expensive place to live?  It is not very cheap as it near London. The prices are competitive.

Average price of a pint?  £1.20 at the SU, over £1.50 in town.

And the price of a takeaway?  Varies from £1.20 kebab shop to £6.99 Dominos.

What’s the part-time work situation?  Plenty of jobs available on campus through the SU. Advertisement of jobs can be found at the SU’s Jobshop or on www.thesu.com jobshop section.  Jobs can be found on and off campus.

Summary

What’s the best feature about the place?  Very lively, diverse and great balance between social and academic life. Beautiful town.

And the worst?  No parking spaces.

And to sum it all up?  Oxford Brookes is a great place to live and study, offers a dynamic environment for personal career and development.
