Living

What's it like as a place to live? The campuses differ: Hendon is in a nice area with good transport and on-campus facilities, and Trent Park also has good links to London but is set in beautiful parkland.

How's the student accommodation? Uni halls but run by a private contractor. Some are newer than others but most are ensuite. Typical rents for London, but some halls appear better value than others.

What's the student population like? Students from across the world, plenty of local students, mature students etc.

How do students and locals get on? A lot of students are locals, so that helps! No student-locals animosity to speak of.

Studying

What's it like as a place to study? Generally facilities are good, as are teaching support and library facilities. Some difficulties with timetabling etc after a huge shake-up in the academic framework.

What are the teaching staff like? Mostly very good and will go the extra mile to see you, even if they are stretched.

Socialising

What are student societies like? Around 50 societies with 1500 members - ranging from religious to cultural to hobbies and sports (competitive teams run separately from societies). We even have a woodland animal appreciation society.

What's a typical night out? Few drinks in the uni bar then into London.

And how much does it cost? Depends where you go to in town, or you could go to one of the nights at uni; entrance average £3.50.

How can you get home safely? Plenty of trustworthy cabs with freefones. Night buses stop outside campuses. Free shuttle bus from tube station to Trent Park.

Money

Is it an expensive place to live? As it's London, it's not cheap. But with plenty of opportunities for part-time work you should be ok.

Average price of a pint? On campus £2, off campus £2.60-ish

And the price of a takeaway? £5-£10.

What's the part-time work situation? University careers service website plus SU notice boards to help you find a job. Most students have no problem finding something close, with some jobs on campus available. Most wages will recognise the higher cost of living.

Summary

What's the best feature about the place? Diversity of students and dedication of academics.

And the worst? Expensive living costs and a quite sterile looking campus at Hendon (the VC said no posters anywhere!).

And to sum it all up?  Middlesex is different in a fantastic way, offering the best of the traditional and modern with a huge diversity in students and opportunities.
