Student view

Living

Main campus, Brayford, is ideally sited at the bottom of modern Lincoln, with fantastic views up to the top of Steep Hill and the historic city. The Cathedral dominates the skyline and provides a wonderful contrast to the modern university buildings: original building (the Atrium) is very impressive; also learning resources centre, science building and state-of-the-art sports centre. The university has also developed and breathed life into derelict buildings on campus: old great central warehouse has been transformed into the library and the old locomotive engine sheds into the student's union. The newly-opened Engine Shed is one of the regions largest and most impressive student venues, consists of bars, concert hall and union offices; in its first year the venue attracted a number of big-name artists. University has a number of campuses. Riseholme Park, a 240-hectare estate (housing agriculture, animal-related and biological science courses) is very close to the city, making it possible to enjoy both countryside and city life. Cathedral campus (majority of art and design courses) is in impressive historic buildings around the Cathedral. The university also has campuses in Hull and Holbeach. SU is very active and aims to work with the university to improve the student experience; very successful athletic union, education and welfare elements, community volunteers encouraging involvement in the union, university and the community. Many sports and societies. Amazing growth in nightlife in last few years: many new pubs and bars battling hard for student market. There's plenty to do and many laughs to be had.

Summary

Housing: University-approved list; fairly cheap, good quality and standards rising with lots of new developments. Halls on campus getting old. Eats: Meal for £2.50-£3.50 on campus. Pub food OK; some 2-for-1 offers. Loads of takeaways and fast-food outlets. Drink: SU bar has a great atmosphere. Some good, new bars in the city and Brayford Waterfront. Nightlife: SU bars all open late; big names in SU venue include The Zutons, Babyshambles, Dirty Pretty Things, Kings of Leon and the Beautiful South. Nights hosted atRitzy, Po Na Na's, Sugarcubes and Scream. Cinema on Brayford Waterfront. Locals: Generally fine, most friendly (minority hostile to students). Sports: Local clubs. Lincoln FC has good student offers. Financial help: University student services helpful; applications processed quickly. Best features: Modern campus in beautiful surroundings with city centre 5 mins away. And worst: Can't get away with anything without being found out! And transport links not that hot.
