Several universities have recruited more students than they were allowed this year and have been fined for doing so. The government limits the number of students which English universites may recruit each year. The fines imposed on the universities reflect the level of over-recruiting. 60 universities and FE colleges have been fined a grand total of £15.67 million for over-recruiting 4235 students. Particularly hard hit were De Montfort University (£3.38 million), Hertfordshire University( (£1.86 million) and Edge Hill University (almost £1 million).
