Attending summer schools run by the Sutton Trust works well, according to new research from Bristol University. The summer schools are designed to give those 17- and 18-year-old pupils, who might later become the first in their families to go on to higher education, a taste of university life. 76% of those attending gained places at leading universities, as compared with 55% of those who did not. The summer schools are heavily over-subscribed. This year the Sutton Trust is holding summer schools in 50 subjects at seven top universities − Bristol, Cambridge, Durham, Imperial College London, Nottingham, St Andrews and University College London. Oxford University now runs its own summer school.
