Grace Jackson, President Emmanuel College Students' Union (3rd year English)
What’s it like as a place to live? Very lively, occasionally stressful – but with beautiful views! A nice community spirit, open to everyone.
How’s the student accommodation? We get it for all 3 years. The quality varies – a few beautiful ensuite rooms, quite a lot of sets (bedroom & study), lots of average-sized rooms with a sink. Very reasonably priced, rents vary according to size and quality.
What’s the student population like? Diverse – lots of internationals, plenty of Londoners and lots from around the UK. A favourable ratio of state and independent students.
How do students and locals get on? Not much interaction. We are ‘warned’ at the beginning of the year about bike theft, no-go areas (not nearby though) and homeless people – rather patronising – there is very rarely any trouble.
What’s it like as a place to study? Currently our library is being redeveloped – which is and will be a lovely place to study. People revise on the paddock in the summer!
What are the teaching staff like? Great! Lots of celeb-academics! Most are 100% committed in their students. They work you hard.
What are student societies like? Loads! Every sport is represented. We also have the Real Ice Cream Society, a thriving drama society, an art society, an active students union….etc
What’s a typical night out? Drinks in the bars, cheesy club night.
And how much does it cost? £10−£15
How can you get home safely? By walking. Cambridge is tiny and Emma is very near the bars and clubs.
Is it an expensive place to live? Cambridge is expensive but college is reasonable. The college has the cheapest bar in town! People make their loans last.
Average price of a pint? College bar: £1.60
And the price of a takeaway? £5−£6
What’s the part-time work situation? You aren’t allowed. But you can work in the college bar or the college library (for minimum wage.) Employment opportunities during vacations – summer schools etc.
What’s the best feature about the place? The bar, with our great club nights, cheap drinks and student-friendly atmosphere.
And the worst? It can feel like a pressure cooker during exam term – you need to get way sometimes!
And to sum it all up? There’s something for everyone at Emmanuel, but you’ll be expected to work (and play) hard.
