It’s the ‘up and coming’ college in Cambridge – fresh-faced, having become a full member of the university less than ten years ago. However it has been based in the city for 100+ years, with some fine-looking Victorian buildings. There’s a huge amount of energy swirling around, as it bids to establish itself amongst the Cambridge colleges. New societies are constantly being set up and it has a new, and very large, bar – which is useful! Fantastic mix of students; excellent college SU (only college to have a sabbatical president and welfare service available by phone 24/7). A little way out from the centre, which has its benefits eg own football and hockey pitch. And you are allowed on the grass, a novelty for a Cambridge college! Library and computer room open 24 hours. Large amount of modern ensuite accommodation – which is very nice!
Housing: College accommodation excellent; most students live in for at least 2 years (quality of local houses variable). Eats: New café serves cold food; snacks and cheap food in hall (meal £3+). Formal hall’s always good banter. Takeaways close by; fine restaurants in Cambridge. Local leisure park full of usual chains (eg Nandos) with good lunch-time menus! Drink: Homerton Bar cheap(ish) compared to pubs, (£2 a pint). Great pubs in the vicinity. Nightlife: Friendly college bar with cheap pool, jukebox, quiz machine; nearby pubs and clubs; cinema/bowling complex over the road. Good college drama and music groups, steel pan band, large Christian Union, strong les-bi-gay group. Good SU organised events (2 big ones a term and a few mini ones) Sports: Most sports possible at college level, strong netball and football. Travel: Pilkington travel award, Erasmus scheme, other bursaries and info. Financial help: Easily available; range of college and university funds. Jobs: Not recommended (though not forbidden, as is commonly perceived) due to work commitments, but many work in local pubs as well as college bar. Best features: Friendly, relaxed and fun! And worst: Cost.
Julie Covington (singer), Dawn French (comedian), Cherie Lunghi, (actress), Nick Hancock (comedian), Nick Hornby (author), Kieran West (olympic gold medallist).
